If you're looking for inspiration in today's tough economy, look no further than Hawaii's many family-owned businesses. Through the years, these companies have worked hard to survive the economic ups and downs, establishing themselves as long-standing pillars in our community.
In the construction industry especially, we admire our many family-owned and operated contractors for their perseverance and ability to weather the economic downturns. With more than 3,000 local companies filing for bankruptcy in 2009 alone, these contractors, who have maintained their operations – and in some cases, even experienced some growth – are survivors, providing a positive outlook for our industry. The hard-working families behind these businesses have proven that they have just as much grit, determination and dedication to their craft as the big boys.
But as many of them will tell you, the true success of a company is not always measured by how much money you make, but by the reputation you maintain. Many of Hawaii's multi-generational construction companies were founded decades ago upon the most basic of values, all of which remain important today – work hard, do right by your customers, treat your employees with respect, and remain committed to your business. By following this simple business model, these contractors managed to uphold their core values while continually adapting their operations to meet the changing needs of the industry.
The Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP) has also remained attuned to the changes in our industry, continuing to look for innovative ways to serve as a resource and advocate on behalf of our more than 200 member contractors. Most recently, PRP was instrumental in working with the Legislature on the establishment of a construction task force to explore the direct impact of our industry on Hawaii's economy. The task force, comprised of a broad cross-section of business and community leaders, provided recommendations and state actions that will have a significant and immediate impact on our economy and stimulate job creation for our workers. We are optimistic that the Legislature will consider these recommendations and introduce legislation that will help our industry and bring about positive change in our state.
Just as PRP continues to find ways to support our member ohana, our newsletter features some of our member contractors who are “keeping it in the family,” operating multi-generational businesses that have stood the test of time. Not only do they provide exceptional examples of strength and dedication, they also serve as role models for our next generation of industry leaders, providing guidance to their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren as they prepare for the inevitable transition of the business from one generation to the next. Through their efforts, it's safe to say that Hawaii's construction industry will remain in very good hands for years to come.
