Mass Transit & TOD
The Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP) believes that Honolulu’s proposed Rail Transit Project will put Hawaii on track for the right kind of change: creating better communities and a better quality of life for our residents.
In October 2009, the $483 million first phase of the Rail Transit project was awarded to Kiewit Pacific Company, who will construct the 6.5-mile elevated guideway route between Kapolei and Pearl Highlands. As a supporter of rail, PRP is pleased to see the project moving forward and is looking forward to the ground breaking of the first phase of construction in early 2010.
Rail will provide us with an affordable, reliable mode of transportation that will help to ease traffic concerns and promote hassle-free commuting. Studies show that people who live in rail-accessible neighborhoods need fewer cars, drive less, walk more and are less likely to experience or contribute to traffic congestion. In addition, rail will also encourage transit-oriented development (TOD), allowing communities and businesses to flourish along the route. With millions of federal dollars ready for investment in transit for Oahu and the potential to create thousands of jobs, we believe that rail is needed now.
